Peace Coffee Donates Prize Miniroaster

— filed under:

After participating in the annual Roaster's Guild Retreat and winning first place in the roasting competition, Peace Coffee's team "Los Guapos" received the snazzy miniroaster, Probatino by Probat Burns. They decided to donate it to CoopCoffee's long-time producer-partner Maya Vinic in Mexico and we can happily announce it's safe arrival!

The Roasters Guild is a trade guild of the Specialty Coffee Association of America consisting of specialty roasters dedicated to the craft of roasting quality coffee. Each year, a team-roasting competition takes place and this year, some of the staff at Peace Coffee participated in the Roaster’s Guild Retreat in Minnesota.

The participants were given 14 pounds of green beans of three different origins: one from Guatemala, one from Ethiopia and one from Costa Rica. They were given an entire day to come up with a roasted blend to be cupped (thorough coffee testing) and judged on the quality of the roast.

probatino miniroasterNot only did Peace Coffee’s team leave with tons of new contacts and friends in the coffee world, but they managed to win first place for their Ethiopian coffee roast! As a prize, Probat Burns (big coffee equipment company) donated a Probatino Table Roaster to any organization of the winner’s choice. Peace Coffees decided to offer the miniroaster to the cooperative Maya Vinic in Chiapas Mexico (a long-time Cooperative Coffee’s producer partner).

Peace Coffee’s team “Los Guapos” had a great time at the competition and the retreat: “It isn't often that you get to meet a couple of hundred other people that do a job similar in nature to the one you do, particularly when your craft is as unique as roasting coffee”, says Keith Tomlinson.

peace coffee teamKeith believes that, “one of the great pleasures of going to the Roaster's Guild retreat is getting the opportunity to taste beans we don't have access to here at Peace Coffee”. And this time, they came away with more than just a new taste. As you see in the pictures, the newly arrived miniroaster will be greatly used and appreciated!

But before the beans start roasting, a few odds and ends need some tying up.  Upon arrival in Mexico, various fees and taxes were subscribed to the miniroaster and many of these still need paying off!  If you are at all interesting in helping CoopCoffees, Peace Coffee, and Maya Vinic, please contact us at bignews@coopcoffees.com.  We'd all greatly appreciate whatever way you can help!
