Coffee Plant
Coffee comes from a tropical plant that belongs to the Rubiaceae family. There are many species of coffee plants, around 25, but the two most economically important are coffea arabica (Arabica coffee), accounting for 70% of world production, and coffea canephora, (Robusta coffee), accounting for nearly all of the rest. Its geographic range lies between 25oN and 25oS. Robusta coffee does not require high altitude for growth--it can be cultivated between sea-level and 800 meters. For arabica coffee however, higher altitudes provide better growth conditions, and as a result, it is primarily cultivated in hilly or mountainous regions. | ![]() |
