Tzanchaj School
Pura Vida'a Tzanchaj School Reconstruction and Expansion in Guatemala
Sixteen months have passed since Hurricane Stan ripped through Guatemala. In one small pueblo, alongside Lake Atitlan, more than 700 families still live in “temporary” nylon shelters.Although much of the reconstruction has been slow to come, Pura Vida’s promise to assist the community of Tzanchaj with their school is quickly becoming a reality. With the help of Child Aid (www.child-aid.org), the new classroom walls are standing, the ceiling is in place, and the windows and doors are on their way.
Although the new classrooms are not fully completed, the progress is tangible. And at a time when many promises of support remain unfulfilled, the efforts of Pura Vida and Child Aid give families hope for the futures of their children.
Parents are comforted knowing that their sons and daughters will be in a safe place during the
day, and that they are developing skills that will enrich their lives. The children are excited as
well. Pointing to a classroom on the second floor of the school, one sixth grader said with a big
grin, “that is going to be my new classroom, and I can see the whole world from up there.”
Pura Vida’s response to one coffee-growing community’s disaster is making it possible for more
children to receive an education. Through education, we are brightening their futures as well as
that of the community.
