FTIS 2008 - 3rd Fair Trade International Symposium
After the first two Fair Trade International Symposiums held in Montreal (Canada) in 2002 and 2006, the third symposium took place from May 14th to 16th 2008 in Montpellier (France). The topic of this symposium was “New Dimensions in Fair Trade: Implications and Challenges”. Monika Firl from CoopCoffees/CoopSol in Montreal and Santiago Paz López from Cepicafe, Peru were there to share their experience in the world of Fair Trade and expand their networks.
The symposium was organized by the CIRAD (French Agricultural Research Center for International Development), the PFCE (Fair Trade French Network), the CRI-IEDES (Research Center of the Institute of Studies on Economic and Social Development) and FairNESS (network of researchers and graduates working on Fair Trade), in collaboration with many partners from France and Quebec.
Researchers, professionals and Fair Trade operators from around the world gathered together to share their opinion and experience about Fair Trade. The different actors of the Fair Trade movement also discussed about the new implications that they are facing, following the unprecedented expansion of Fair Trade. The objectives of the symposium were to present the state of the studies on Fair Trade, to share information about research projects, and to confront opinions on the future prospects of Fair Trade.
Monika and Santiago found it a constructive experience - giving them the opportunity to discuss with researchers, producers and Fair Trade allies the shared Cooperative Coffees/CEPICAFE vision for the future of Fair Trade. It was both an educational and excellent networking opportunity.
